When the pressure in the left chamber falls below that of the container being evacuated, the gas from the container is continuously drawn into the left chamber via the intake valve in accordance with the principle of gas pressure equilibrium; this marks the intake phase. When the piston reaches its right-hand position, the left chamber of the cylinder is filled with gas. The piston then moves from the right-hand end towards the left-hand end, at which point the intake valve closes automatically. The gas is gradually compressed as the piston moves from right to left. When the gas within the cylinder reaches the discharge pressure, the discharge valve opens and the gas is expelled, completing one working cycle. As the piston moves from the left-hand end towards the right-hand end, the above cycle is repeated until the container being evacuated reaches a certain equilibrium pressure.
